Abstract

Shadows possess the cognition of imagery and psychological feelings that have long been neglected by visual designers. Adopting a textual analysis method, the photography project "The Shadows" attempts to use shadows as a visual focus and the form of expression. It reveals the importance of shadows and their cognition of imagery through the concepts of space and architects. Based on the concept of 'figure' and 'background' in the composition, the researcher used the technique of 'Straight Photography' to capture shadows in the living spaces and objects, so that shadows can be elevated to the status of 'figure', thereby exploring the relationship between people, space, and objects. This series presents six thematic works, with a total of thirty-one pieces in it. The psychological feelings by introducing geometric shape into 'shadow' helps the author came up an idea, which the author called it-“Shadow Composition”. Therefore, to investigate the psychological feelings of visual perception on geometrical shapes could enhance the aesthetic beauty of formative arts and visual aesthetics of shapes.
The purposes of this research are as follows :
(1) To utilize the shadow formation to open up the cognition of imagery and daily aesthetic observation of the shadows.
(2) To use the shadows as a conceptual symbol of the passage of time, connecting time and space.
(3) To publish the works that are able to traverse time and space and remain for a long time. Through the design of exhibition venue, the works, the space and the audience resonate with each other. It establishes a new form of viewing visual aesthetic and expands the audiences’ and visual creators’ new horizons of observation. At the same time, it enables the photographic works to do the derivative works.
According to the results of the feedback from the exhibition: (1) Shadows can become the visual focus and the form of expression in the works, and also the elements of creations to visual creators. (2) “Shadow composition” works can ignite audiences' imagination and self-interpretations. (3) Geometric forms of shadows can generate psychological feelings and emotional responses for the viewers. The research is related to the connection between photography and contemporary art, as well as issues surrounding the publication and exhibition space of photographic works. Hope that more in-depth discussions can be carried out in future research.
